Trezor.io/start® | Official Setup Guide
A secure, easy walkthrough to get your new Trezor device up and protecting your crypto. Includes links to official resources and best practices.
Overview
This guide walks you through unboxing, initializing, firmware updates, creating a recovery, and connecting to Trezor Suite. Follow each step carefully — do not skip the recovery step. If something looks off during setup (unexpected prompts, unfamiliar firmware warnings, or sealed packaging tampered), stop and contact official support.
Before you begin (Checklist)
- Genuine Trezor device in sealed packaging — inspect for tampering.
- A computer (Windows, macOS, Linux) or supported mobile device and a stable internet connection.
- Paper and pen (for writing your recovery). Avoid storing recovery digitally.
- Allow 20–40 minutes for the full secure setup.
Step 1 — Unbox & Inspect
What to look for
Check that the packaging seal is unbroken and the holographic label (if present) matches the model. Verify you ordered from an authorized seller — counterfeit devices are rare but possible.
Optional: Verify authenticity online
You can confirm official product info and compare models via Trezor's official site (see links at the end).
Step 2 — Connect & Start
Use the supplied USB cable to connect your Trezor to your computer. Open the official Trezor start page and follow the on-screen instructions. The device will show a welcome screen; do not interact with any other software that asks for your seed.
Step 3 — Install / Open Trezor Suite
Why Trezor Suite
Trezor Suite is the official app for managing your device: firmware updates, sending/receiving crypto, and advanced settings. Choose the Desktop app or the official web app as recommended on the start page.
Step 4 — Initialize your device
- On the device, choose Create a new wallet (or Restore if you have an existing recovery).
- Follow on-device instructions to set a PIN. The PIN protects device access — choose a PIN you can remember but is not trivial.
- When asked, write the recovery words exactly in order on the supplied card (or paper). Keep this offline and stored in a safe place.
Pro tip
Never type your recovery on a computer or photograph it. Consider a fireproof safe or geographically separated backups for extra safety.
Step 5 — Firmware & Security
After initialization, check for firmware updates through Trezor Suite. If an official firmware update is required, follow the Suite prompts — the device will show update confirmations on its screen. Never install unsigned or unofficial firmware.
Warning
If the device prompts you with an "unofficial software detected" message and you didn't trigger it, disconnect and contact official support immediately.
Step 6 — Finalize & Test
Once updated and initialized, create a small test transaction (send a very small amount to/from your Trezor) to confirm everything works. Review addresses on the device screen — the on-device display is the ultimate source of truth for addresses and confirmations.
Recovery & Best Practices
Recovery phrase
Trezor uses a recovery phrase (BIP39/SLIP39 depending on model/settings) — this phrase is the only way to recover funds if the device is lost. Treat it like cash: keep it offline and in multiple secure locations if needed.
Do's & Don'ts
- Do verify addresses on the device screen before sending.
- Do keep firmware up to date via the official Suite.
- Don't share recovery words, PIN, or passphrase with anyone.
- Don't use cloud storage, screenshots, or email for your recovery.
Troubleshooting
If the device isn't recognized, try a different USB cable or port. Use the official Support pages or FAQ for step-by-step help. For lost PIN or failed boots follow official recovery instructions only.
